This blog is intended as a personal note-book of various photography related ideas (interesting image techniques, DIY photography stuff, etc.) while helping other photo amateurs to get ideas for their next photo or things they can try to shoot at home without spending any money.

Me and photography

My name is Ingus Rukis, I’m from Latvia, Europe. As you might imagine, I’m not a professional photographer. In October 2007 I joined a photography course to improve my skills. Photography is my hobby and I have learned it as such. I’m a programmer by education (having masters degree in computer science) and doing web programming as my day job. As of the photo world - I had my first camera like 10 or even more years ago, it was a Kodak consumer film camera (no zoom, no exchangable lenses, nothing). Then when the digital cameras became more and more popular I decided to buy Canon PowerShot A70 at the time of purchase it was one of the best consumer cameras on the market - 3Mpix sensor, some manual modes and that’s the time when I found out that photography attracts me. After a couple of years with Canon PowerShot A70 I found out that the limits of camera are too low and decided to go with my first SLR camera - Nikon D50, which I use till this day.

As one of my main ideas is that photography shouldn’t take all my earned money, I haven’t made any big investments in the camera, so at the moment my gear includes just:

  • Nikkor AF-S 18-55mm 1:3.5-5.6 G kit lens
  • Nikkor 50mm F1.8 lens
  • Sigma 70-300mm F4-5.6 APO DG MACRO zoom lens
  • A hardly working Cullmann 20 AF-N flash
